Local Priorities Burglary Concern Update

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

On Friday 3rd July 2026 at about 9am, officers from Bellingham and Sydenham SNT arrested a male and a female who were shown wanted for burglary. The pair had targeted a vulnerable victim and stole various items from his address, including money and his phone. The phone and money were recovered by police during the post-arrest search. Both suspects are currently in police custody awaiting interview. We hope for a positive outcome for this, and we hope for custodial sentences for both once this has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service. Bellingham SNT also contacted Phoenix Housing to change the victim's locks due to numerous keys being found on one of the suspects so the aim there is to prevent any access to the property if the keys got copied.

We are dedicated to bringing offenders to justice, so please report any incidents you have to police as we do check recent reports that have occurred on the ward. It is through this checking recent reports that PC Meyer of Bellingham SNT was able to recognise the suspects as being outstanding.

If you have not already done so, please do consider video doorbells and cameras inside your address, particularly if you help care for someone vulnerable who could get targeted by criminals. This will help us with any criminal investigations and will help swiftly bring any offenders to justice as we do regularly check any CCTV footage of incidents that occur on our ward to see if we recognise the person involved.

While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you:  

• Double lock your door every time you leave the house  

• If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access.  

• Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows.  

• Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through.  

• If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house.  

• Make sure all valuables are out of sight. 

• Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps.  

• In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on.  

• Set your burglar alarm 

• Lock your  shed or garage 

• Mark, register or record your valuables.
